Nestled in the heart of the South Pacific, Fiji is a breathtaking tropical destination known for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear turquoise lagoons, and vibrant ancient customs. Whether you’re a beach lover or an adventure seeker who enjoys island hopping, Fiji offers something for everyone. Having just returned from our trip to this island paradise, we’ve put together a list of essential things to know before traveling to Fiji. Before you pack your bags and set sail, read our guide to make the most of your time in this tropical haven.
1. Fijians Are Among the Most Welcoming People
Fijians are known for their warm and sincere hospitality. In fact, they might just be the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. When they greet you with a heartfelt “Bula! Welcome home to Fiji,” it’s not just a phrase – they truly mean it. As you explore the islands, you’ll be met with “Bula!” everywhere you go. It’s similar to the Hawaiian “Aloha” and conveys warmth and welcome. My interactions with Fijians were some of the most genuine I’ve ever experienced, and their kindness made each day even more special.

2. Fijians Love Children
If you’re traveling with kids, you’ll be glad to know that Fijians absolutely love children. From the moment we arrived at the resort, our son was surrounded by so much love and attention. Everywhere we went, people would stop to chat, play with him, and make him feel right at home. It was really heartwarming to see how naturally they connect with kids.
3. Best Time to Visit Fiji – Plan for Winter
The best time to visit Fiji is during its winter season, from May to October. This is the dry season, offering mild temperatures and minimal rainfall – perfect for outdoor activities like sunbathing, snorkeling, or simply relaxing by the beach. Planning your trip during these months will ensure you enjoy Fiji’s natural beauty in ideal weather conditions.
4. Most Resorts Have Kids Clubs
If you’re traveling as a family, you’ll love the kids’ clubs offered at most Fijian resorts. These clubs cater to children of different age groups, from toddlers to teenagers, and offer a range of fun, educational, and cultural activities. Programs often include local Fijian crafts, fish feeding, coconut painting, and even Fijian language lessons. Most resorts also offer nanny services with flexible schedules. We particularly enjoyed the kids’ clubs and nannies at the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort and Sheraton Denarau. Keep in mind that these services usually aren’t included in your stay and require an extra fee, but they are very affordable.
5. Embrace “Fiji Time”
The concept of Fiji Time is something you’ll hear about the moment you arrive. It reflects the laid-back, relaxed pace of life in Fiji – a perfect match for your tropical vacation. However, it can sometimes be a little frustrating if you’re expecting things to move quickly. In Fiji, schedules are flexible, and tasks often happen at a leisurely pace. Relax and enjoy the slower tempo; after all, you’re on island time!
6. Must-Have Experiences in Fiji
While in Fiji, make sure to:
Take Island Day Trips: Hop on a ferry and explore as many islands as you can. Each one offers its unique beauty, and most are within easy reach of Nadi, Fiji’s main port. The longest ferry ride we took was just two hours. A visit to Castaway Island is a must!
Join a Kava Ceremony: Kava is Fiji’s traditional drink, and participating in a Kava ceremony is a cultural experience you won’t want to miss.
Visit a Village: For an authentic look at the Fijian way of life, visit a local village. Bring along books or toys for the children – they’ll be thrilled to receive them!
7. Visit These 2 Archipelagos
Fiji is made up of over 330 islands, grouped into multiple archipelagos. If your time in Fiji is limited, I recommend exploring the Mamanuca Islands and the Yasawa Islands, both easily accessible by ferry or plane. These are some of the most beautiful and close-to-the-mainland islands, ideal for island-hopping.
8. Respect Local Customs
When visiting Fijian villages, it’s important to respect local customs. Be sure to dress modestly by covering your shoulders and knees, especially during village visits. This is a sign of respect for their traditions and culture.
9. Fijian Food – A Fusion of Flavors
Thanks to the country’s diverse history, Fijian cuisine is a delicious blend of indigenous and Indian influences. Expect to taste plenty of fish, seafood, coconut, and tropical fruits like papaya and mango. One dish you must try is Fish Kokoda—a traditional Fijian dish made with raw fish, vegetables, and cassava marinated in coconut milk and lime. It’s a fresh, flavorful meal that embodies the essence of Fijian cooking.
