What You Can Find in Papeete Market
The Papeete Market is a large, lively, and vibrant market full of color. Spanning two floors, it brings together artisans and vendors from across the archipelago. Go early in the morning and get ready to spend at least 1-2 hours here! On the ground floor, you will find a large array of tropical fruits like papayas, guavas, lychees (and so many others whose names I didn’t even know), local food, flowers (bouquets but also leis and crowns – these are one of the market’s attractions, and they are a good prop for a later photo session). On the second floor, you will find handcrafted souvenirs and artisanal crafts, as well as Tahitian black pearls and jewelry, traditional clothing, bags, and accessories, and food stalls serving local cuisine and drinks.
Don’t miss: Poisson cru, a delicious traditional dish made with raw fish marinated in coconut milk and lime—one of the best things to eat in Tahiti!

Papeete Market Opening Hours
- Monday to Friday: 5:30 AM – 4:00 PM
- Saturday: 5:30 AM – 1:00 PM
- Sunday: 4:30 AM – 11:00 AM
Best Time to Visit Papeete Market
The best time to visit Papeete Market is early in the morning, when you can catch a better glimpse of everything the market has to offer. Sunday mornings are particularly special—you’ll have the chance to enjoy a traditional Tahitian breakfast. Be sure to try firi firi—coconut-flavored doughnuts that pair perfectly with hot coffee.
Why the Papeete Market Belongs on Your Tahiti Itinerary
Even if you’re only spending one day in Tahiti, visiting the market is one of the most authentic and enjoyable things to do in Papeete. It’s not just a place to shop—it’s a window into daily life in French Polynesia, where tradition, flavor, and creativity come together in perfect harmony.
